Background
The Overmountain shelter is along a Revolutionary War historic route of the “Overmountain Men". It was also used in the filming of the movie Winter People (1989). They had a fake log cabin built over to the right of it. This was suppose to be where the Campbells lived for those familar with the movie. Ted Kotcheff directed the film but moved locations after there was no snow so they eventualy moved the set somewhere else.
About the Shelter
Overmountain shelter is a shelter located in North Carolina and is considered one of the better views on the trail. Two stories and both indoor and outdoor accomodations make this a shelter to stop at for sure if you are hiking near by. This does however draw attention from other hiking groups besides thru-hikers and is frequented by day hikers and sectioners. This site can handle large groups and the water source is a reliable, albeit small, stream on a muddy side path to the shelter.
The view from this shelter was Backpacker Magazines 'Best View From A Shelter'. It is also known on some maps as the "Yellow Mountain Barn".
