The Appalachian Trail
- “The Appalachian National Scenic Trail, generally known as the A.T., is a 2,174 mile (3,500 km) marked hiking and camping trail in the eastern United States, extending between Springer Mountain in Georgia and Mount Katahdin in Maine.” (excerpt from AppalachianTrail.com)
- Most hikers begin the trail at Springer Mountain around April or May. Thru-hiking the entire trail takes, on average, between five to seven months.
- The first person to thru-hike the entire AT was Earl Schaffer in 1948. He subsequently wrote about his experience in the book Walking with Spring.
*Use this interactive Google Map to follow our progress on the Appalachian Trail. The entire path of the trail is shown by the red line and all of the trail shelters with blue markers. This map will load centered on the location of where we made our most recent blog post.
| BLUE pins mark trail shelters and have links to more info. |
RED pins mark locations of towns with internet where we uploaded blog posts and provide links to the blog post made in that location. |
